Film Poster: Iron Man 2

A brand spanking new poster for Iron Man 2 has just been released, which shows Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man back to back with his buddy-turned-nemesis-turned-oh-I-don’t-know, War Machine (played in the sequel by Don Cheadle, who replaced Terrence Howard for undisclosed reasons late last year).

I still don’t know how I feel about Cheadle playing War Machine. While I’m a big fan of his, thanks to movies such as Boogie Nights and Hotel Rwanda, I have doubts whether he can bring life to the Rhodey character in the same way as Howard did in the first film.

All the same, the first Iron Man was a great piece of popcorn fodder and I’m most definitely going to catch the sequel when it hits cinemas in May 2010.

Movie News: First images of ‘Karate Kid’ remake

Here are a few newly-released stills from the forthcoming remake of The Karate Kid, which stars Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (son of Will and Jada Pinkett).

The film, which is being produced by Jaden’s father, has been re-titled The Kung Fu Kid, presumably because having Jackie Chan star as a karate master would be a little far-fetched.

The Kung Fu Kid is due to be released in June 2010.

Movie News: ‘Panic Attack’ creator signs deal with Sam Raimi

I posted about this neat little sci-fi flick by Fede Alvarez a few weeks back on Twitter, but its popularity took a recent skyrocket thanks to the news that Evil Dead and Spider Man director Sam Raimi has confirmed a big-budget collaboration with the Uruguay-born filmmaker.

While the story is pretty run-of-the-mill as far as alien invasions go – think Cloverfield meets Independence Day – the production and score are absolutely spot on, so with exposure and backing like this, Alvarez deserves to go far.

Movie Trailer: Ninja Assassin (red band)

For those who missed the first Ninja Assassin trailer I posted last month, fear not! This latest offering brings even more ninja action than its predecessor, complete with buckets of blood and enough unbelievable slow-motion killshots to keep even the most voracious fan of over-the-top action flicks satisfied.

I doubt it’ll win any awards for its dialogue, but Ninja Assassin still tops my current list of films to look forward to before the end of the year.

Movie Trailer: Percy Jackson & the Olympians

This full trailer has just been released for the ancient Greece-themed Percy Jackson & the Olympians. The film was directed by Chris Columbus, who also directed the first two Harry Potter films and produced the third.

The film (full title Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief), was adapted from the first in a series of books by American writer Rick Riordan.

It stars Logan Lerman (Gamer, The Butterfly Effect) as the demigod protagonist, and also features Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson and Uma Thurman.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is due out in February 2010.

Movie Trailer: Daybreakers

Vampire action flick Daybreakers is the first mainstream film to be directed by Michael and Peter Spierig.

The Australian siblings – best known so far for their 2003 zombie/alien crossover Undead – have snared some big names to bring us the story of a world where most of the population have become vampires and human blood is a precious, dwindling resource.

Starring Willem Dafoe, Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill, the film is due out at the start of 2010. While it’s built on the not-so-subtle allegory of earth’s greedy over-consumption of natural resources, it’s supposed to be as much comedy as action, and we’re asked not to take it too seriously.

Movie Trailer: Bad Lieutenant – Port of Call New Orleans

For those of you that haven’t already seen the early promos for Werner Herzog’s forthcoming Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, it’s well worth having a dig around. The film, a remake of an 1992 Abel Ferrara film, stars Nicolas Cage and looks insane.

I have no idea if this film is going to be any good. On the one hand, it’s Nic Cage. However, I am a firm believer that no actor who carries on getting work as long as Cage has, is capable of producing nothing but the stinkers this man has squeezed out in the past few years. He could well be back on form with this one.

Plus, I mean just watch the trailer, will you? The guy looks as though he might at any second ACTUALLY murder someone’s grandmother, and not just in the film! You’d be an accessory to NOT go and see it!

Movie Trailer: Grown Ups

Following on from the rather good Funny People, 2010 will see the release of Grown Ups, the next Adam Sandler-penned comedy.

With a solid cast of former Saturday Night Live cast members including Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Kevin James and Sandler himself, the film is about five childhood friends who reunite after 30 years apart, following the death of their school basketball coach.

The humour in the trailer looks very much as you’d expect from this cast: a mixture of gross-out, slapstick and deadpan. The only thing missing was a Chris Rock racism skit, but maybe that’ll be in the next trailer.

Movie Trailer: Kick-Ass

Here’s a teaser trailer for the film adaptation of Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass comic.

I have to admit, I’ve never been a fan of Millar’s output, which I always considered tried that little bit too hard to be edgy, while other (IMHO, better) writers managed it with a bit of subtlety and grace. I hated the Wanted comic and I’ve heard the film version, while vastly different to the source material, wasn’t worth the time of day either.

I have to admit though, this film (directed by Matthew Vaughn, of Layer Cake/Stardust fame) looks kinda cool.

The story centres around a young, bored teenage boy named Dave Lizewski (played by relative newcomer Aaron Johnson), who decides one day that he’ll fight back against the injustices of the world by donning a costume and assuming the mantle of the crime-fighting, though super power-free ‘Kick-Ass’. As you’d expect from Millar, not all goes according to plan.

The film also stars Nicolas Cage as fellow vigilante, ‘Big Daddy’, as well as Superbad‘s Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Kick-Ass is due for release in the second quarter of 2010.

Movie Trailer: Clash Of The Titans

Here’s a brand new trailer for the Clash Of The Titans remake, directed by Louis Leterrier (The Transporter 1 & 2, The Incredible Hulk) and featuring Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes and fast-rising star Sam Worthington.

I don’t know about you, but having watched the trailer I am very, very excited about seeing this film.

Hey, I loved the original too, but I think this might just be a fitting tribute to an all-time classic, something that is very rare in today’s film industry.
